The Andhra Pradesh government’s decision a few days ago to pay compensation to the innocent Muslim youths arrested for their alleged roles in Mecca mosque blast was welcomed by the community as a sign of good governance and repentance on part of the state government.
Some community leaders had even termed the decision historic. It was expected that other states too would follow suit to heal the wounds of Muslims, whose leaders for long have been trying to convince the authorities that sweeping arrests of youth after each terrorist attack lead to victimization of the whole community.
Some newspapers too ran the story. However, many leading national dailies and channels that always compete with each other to give front page eight column coverage to reports of Muslim youth arrest in terror activities relegated the development to single column in inside pages.
For a while the development had goo d vibes. But it was short-lived as latest reports coming out from the Congress-ruled state show that government had other ideas on mind. Some Rs 70 lakh compensation money will come from the Mecca mosque coffer. That is a pity. This only shows that the government is not sensitive towards the community’s sentiment.
Chances are that the whole drama must have been enacted keeping in mind the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh and other states. If this is so then Congress has been exposed.
