Govt in dock after team Anna rejects Lokpal draft

The Congress-led UPA government is certainly for trouble after Team Anna has rejected the Lokpal Bill draft readied by Parliament Standing Committee. Arvind Kejriwal, an important member of the team, has expressed his displeasure over the details of the draft. He is upset with the Centre for not fulfilling its assurance that the government had given to Anna when he was on dharna.

The inclusion of NGOs in Lokpal is at the centre of controversy. Kejriwal says: "NGOs that get government money should be brought under Lokpal. Corruption in NGOS and media should be strengthened by separate mechanisms."

There are other issues like the government's continued move to keep CBI under its control that are creating rift between Team Anna and the ruling party. Other members have also expressed their disappointment.

Now, the government has no other option than to rollback and adjust the demands being made by Team Anna. But the big question is: will it oblige the Team Anna at a time when UP elections is close by? The government is trapped in a tough situation. If it accedes to Team Anna's demand then it will be shown in poor light and chances are high that the Opposition parties may highlight the issues during the election campaign. On the other hand if the government is firm then Team Ann has threatened of starting another agitation, beginning December 11 at Jantar Mantar.
