Economic growth & ‘starvation’ deaths

India is an emerging economic power. Since liberalisation of the economy in 1991 by the then Congress government the country has grown by leaps and bounds. Lives for many in big cities have changed with many rag to riches stories popping up in the media. But at the same time for many life continues to be full of hardship. The situation in India's boondocks is of great concern. Many people still go to bed empty stomach. Moreover, reports still surface of starvation deaths.

The recent one being in western Odisha. The national media has reported that in the last two days three more people have been reported to have died of alleged starvation in Sinapali block of Nuapada district. This is shocking news for the ruling parties, experts and economists, who had promised better living standard following the economic growth.

But with nothing like this happening, it appears that something is terribly wrong with the system and policies as the benefit of growth has not trickled down to villages and poor people. India's growth has been unequal. The booming economy has further created a huge wedge between poor and the rich.

Until and unless this widening gap is narrowed, India in real sense will never become a power.

Moreover, in cities too the situation is not so good for everyone. Even after all these growth stories many engineers, marketing guys and educated people find it difficult to get jobs with good salary. There are many who are forced to work their asses off for Rs10,000 or 15,000 a month when inflation has touched double digit and overall expenses have gone up.

Something is terribly wrong with the economy that needs to be addressed.
