FDI in retail: Opposition corners the firm Govt

It appears that the government’s decision to allow Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in retails has come at the wrong time with the UP elections just close by. The opposition and ruling BSP in Uttar Pradesh have turned the table on the Congress-led UPA government, accusing it of being anti-poor.

Also, UP chief minister Mayawati has unleashed verbal attacks on Congress Rahul Gandhi. Till now the Congress party had a few advantage as it was playing an important role in getting the land bill introduced in the state. But now it looks that the clock has gone back with the Congress cornered on the FDI issue with the Opposition joining hands. For them it is an opportunity to let down the government.

The other problem that the ruling party at the Centre is facing is that on the FDI issue even its own allies like the Trinamool Congress and the DMK have come out openly. They are demanding an immediate rollback.

But till now the Congress government stands firm arguing that the allowing FDI in the retail industry will only bring in required money in India that off late due to the slowdown of global economy has slowed down.
But the FDI opponents are not willing to buy any such argument. They claim that such move will only create unemployment and arrival of big chain retailers would cripple small shop keepers, traders and farmers.
