Women in several city areas of Delhi are not safe. Newspapers unfailingly report of women being raped, elderly killed, dowry deaths and chain snatching. Despite on and off assurance from the authorities the crime rate is yet to come down. In Gurgaon many women fear being the target of chain snatchers, who have become active in some part of the areas.
Chain snatching is becoming increasingly common in several city areas. The biggest problem is that criminals have good idea of the area and most of the time they get away by committing the crime. Residents too are helpless in checking the crime.
The criminals move on bike and target women. Such activities occur regularly in Noida and other part of the cities too. Many residents complain that the bikers, who have been operating within a kilometre of a certain area, have become a nuisance.
Recently a bag containing gold jewellery of an elderly was snatched. The way things unfolded it appears that the criminal on bike had been monitoring the movement of the victim. The police too are facing difficulties in cracking such cases.
Such cases of snatching can only brought to an end when residents and police work together and should severely punish youth involved in such snatching activities.
