Since the killing of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind al-Qaida, in Pakistan hideouts by the US special trained Seals in May 2011 relation between the two countries have been deteriorating. Following the development, the Americans were furious at Pakistan for sheltering the most wanted man in the world for so long. On the other hand the Pakistan army an old US ally felt let down that the Americans did not think it fit to even inform them before carrying the hunt-Osama operation deep into Pakistan.
Many Pakistanis saw it a move to undermine its sovereignty. But the US defended the act arguing it has all the right to annihilate any target that is its enemy or threat.
After some misgivings things normalised. But a recent development on the Afghan-Pakistan border has added to the situation getting from bad to worse with Pakistan continuing to block NATO supply to Afghanistan in protest against the killing of its 24 soldiers in a U.S. air strike late last month. Pakistan has sought an apology on friendly fire. But the US is not willing to oblige it with both the sides throwing tantrums. It appears that the US is going to lose an old ally with relationship between them getting tense with each passing day.
The latest report that US House passed legislation to freeze USD 700 million Pak aid will only add fuel to fire. The government that has already lost public trust is trying hard to reconcile to the fact that old days of friendship between Pakistan and the US is things of past.
