Lokpal issue: No end to Cong's woes

Activist Anna Hazare continues his attack on the Congress-led UPA government by mounting pressure on it to introduce a strong Lokpal Bill in this session even if it means extending the session for a few days. Also, he has made it clear that in case of government's failure he would unleash a campaign against the UPA government in five poll-bound states.

Certainly, this will make many Congress leaders jittery as they have seen Anna's influence in the Hisar by-elections. Moreover, the Congress that is concentrating on making a comeback in the UP assembly elections is not ready to open another front with Hazare.

So will Congress give up under pressure as it did on the FDI in retail? This and other questions are being debated. The party is seeking more time from Anna to draft a strong bill. But the Gandhian is not willing to oblige.

Till now he has not softened his stand save relenting on his demand on inclusion of the prime minister under the Lokpal ambit. On this issue he has sided with Parliament. It appears that now Anna too is trying to create a wedge among ruling party and the opposition by mellowing down.

Other than this he is also giving a message that he is not above Parliament and he respects the institution. In the battle of hearts and minds, it is Anna who is getting successful. Once again he has succeeded in putting the Congress on the back foot.
