Was the inferno in Kolkata that till now has claimed 73 lives avoidable? It is a difficult question to answer. Still such man-made accidents can be easily minimised as the West had done in the last many decades. The way the multistoryed private hospital turned into a fireball for many attendants and patients in the morning only shows that the building must have lacked fire safety procedure.
Reports show that many patients at the Amri (Dhakuria) Hospital died of asphyxiation. Had there been proper laid out exit and fire extinguishers on floors such an incident would have been minimised. This a sorry state of most of the public places in India. Kolkata is no exception.
The authorities don't care to check fire safety procedures.
In the West a public building and offices will be sealed if they are found flouting the fire safety laws. Here in India everything can work if the authorities' hands are greased.
In cities like New York, from time to time dummy drills take place to make people aware of how to survive in case of fire or chaos. India too should adopt such measures so that lives are not lost in such accidents. A stringent action should be taken against big building owners for not implementing the law.
