A pliant elected Pakistan government is trying to assert itself. It was thought that differences between NATO and Pakistan would be ironed out following NATO’S sorry remark over the killing of two dozen Pakistani soldiers on the weekend. But the opposite has happened with relationship between the US and Pakistan getting strained.
In a latest development, Pakistan in protest over killing of its soldiers has announced that it would boycott talks on the future of Afghanistan. Till now the US officials have restrained from airing their remarks. But the fact is that to resolved Afghanistan imbroglio the US needs Pakistan more than other way. It is this that the Pakistani generals have realized and are trying to assert themselves. Other than this after America’s economic slowdown, Pakistan is also trying to get out of US influence.
With China on its side, Pakistan is ready to take the risk of antagonizing its old partner. If Pakistan continues with its stand then US will find it difficult to contain separatist movements in a landlocked Afghanistan.
With all NATO’s logistical supplies being blocked it would be extremely difficult for the army to operate.
Moreover, Pakistan has also given the US another 15 days to vacate the airbase from where the CIA has been stealthily running drones against militants holing up deep in Pakistan’s tribal areas.
