Nehru remembered

India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was remembered by the nation on his 122nd birth anniversary. All over India the day is marked as Children's Day. Nehru's outstanding contribution to turn India into a democratic and secular country is well established. Many senior politicians including President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh payed homage to the man who shaped India's destiny more than 60 years ago.

Floral tributes were paid to his memorial on the banks of Yamuna.

Congress President and UPA chief Sonia Gandhi also was part of the group that had turned up to pay floral tributes at his memorial.

The 40-minute ceremony was well attended by top-notch Indian politicians across the country.

Nehru, who took part in the Independence movement with Gandhi and others, was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh to Motilal Nehru and Swaroop Rani. His father too was an activist.
