Teachers at receiving end

Teachers continue to grab headlines for all the wrong reasons. In less than seven days two teachers have been beaten up not by students, but by police and politicians. It all started two days ago when a woman teacher was manhandled by a Shiromani Akali Dal Sarpanch Balwinder Singh of Gidderbaha in Punjab.

The assault was caught in the camera and videos of that scene went viral with most of the television channels running 24X7. The Sarpanch was seen slapping a woman teacher mercilessly. The video also showed how the teacher fought back by tyring to hold the Sarpanch by his neck. Anyhow, the cat fight didn't last for long as others interfered and the matter was sorted out.

Had the assault not been caught on camera, the issues would have been hushed up by the state government. But not so. Latest reports point out that a National Woman Commission is going to look into the complaint filed by the victim.

The dust of that incident was yet to settle when another case surfaced. This time policemen were accused of roughing up protesting teachers. The incident happened during a visit of Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal into the village. When the police found it difficult to remove agitating teachers from the entrance of Sukhna village in Muktsar, they roughed them up.

Like the Sarpanch, the policemen should be penalised for allegedly assaulting protesting teachers.
