The report published in international newspapers that the US troops, pulling out of day-to-day combat in Iraq, are carrying with them strange memontos like Saddam Hussein's steel toilet, door and other things, has not come as a shock to many Indians. Throughout history the victors have always taken away precious or something back to their home. The Britishers did it when they ruled a large chunk of the world, including India.
India's many old treasures were lifted from the country. The precious Kōh-i Nūr in posession of the Mughal was transported to England. Later on it became part of the British Crown Jewel. India's many efforts to get it back has yielded no positive results. The popular Peacock thrown too was stolen by the ivaders. Whereever the imperilists went they carried with them memontos to be displayed in their countries.
Keeping the old tradition alive, the Americans too have decided to carry with them something of Hussein palaces to be displayed at a military police museum in Missouri. Of the momentos the most-talked about is the steel toilet and door of the cell in which Saddam was imprisoned before being executed in 2006.
Other than these, reports coming out of Iraq show that the army is taking with them many of Hussein's treasure troves.
But what about petrol?
