Panetta caught in goof up web

When reports surfaced of US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta speech about “India and China emerging as threats” many in New Delhi were confused. America’s dislike for China is well known but not for India. That is why there were surprises in India and elsewhere that what prompted Panetta to air this remark as both India and the US have come closer of late. Their bonhomie is the talk of the world community. Since the rise of China, the US has been going out of the way to cement ties with India and keep it in good humor.

From the time the news emanated many media experts took Panetta’s remark with a pinch of salt. They were right as latter on it was known that it was nothing but a goof up. Realizing the error, Panetta’s office retracted the statement, saying it value close ties with New Delhi.

The former CIA chief, who was addressing the workers at a shipyard in Connecticut, strayed a little bit by mentioning India. Such goof up is not new. Republican George W Bush was known world over for his goof up. A book was also written on his goof up. Even current president Barack Obama has been caught in goof up.

However, the good thing about Panetta is that this time US was quick to retract the statement. The fact is that ailing US feels threatened by the rise of China. And it is taking all possible steps to contain the dragon in the region. Will it succeed?
