Maldives meet may herald peace between India-Pak

After a long gap India and Pakistan have met to iron out their differences. The prime ministers of these two countries interacted on the sidelines of the SAARC summit in Maldives. The meet has sparked a debate not only in India but also in the US whether it would herald another bonhomie between the two nations. Reports have surfaced in the Indian media about how things may normalise in the region if both the countries join hands.

The United States too is positive. Its State Department spokesperson Mark Toner told journalists at a press conference in Washington: "We have said many, many, many times from this podium that we support constructive dialogue between the two countries."

For long US has been suggesting both the countries to end their hostilities and sort out their differences. A good relation between India and Pakistan will help the US solve the complex Afghanistan conflict. But it is not known whether the meeting would yield any positive results.

This is not for the first time that prime ministers of both the countries have sit together to deal with contentious issues that has ruined their relation.

Since the UPA II came to power, its government led by Manmohan Singh has been trying to get friendly with Pakistan. But most of his efforts have failed to churn out positive results.
